Our Friday Medallist this time is an event whose organizers have been working for years to make it greener and more sustainable. We're talking about the Frankfurt Marathon, which was supposed to take place for the 39th time this year. Unfortunately, it had to be canceled due to the COVID-related restrictions – all the more reason to remember and honor it in this way.
The measures implemented around the marathon to protect the environment and climate are diverse. Among other things, the organizer, Motion Events GmbH, donated one euro per finisher (around 12,000 euros) in 2017 for the planting of 4,500 olive trees on the fields of their long-time partner Fattoria La Vialla. "The trees will sequester 240 tons of CO2 per year; they produce oxygen, regulate the water balance, and reduce soil erosion."
Over the past 13 years, more than 230,000 euros have been invested in catering, transportation, waste disposal, merchandising, energy/water, and mobility. In 2014, the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon received the "Green Award" for the world's most environmentally friendly marathon, awarded by AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.
A strong commitment!
