Sports For Future at the World Climate Conference

From November 6 to 18, the 27th World Climate Conference (COP27) is taking place in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, with the participation of the 197 contracting parties, as well as over 3,000 international organizations and non-governmental organizations. As part of COP27, all contracting parties are called upon to:

  • Review and renew their national climate goals,
  • Formulate long-term strategies to reduce their climate-harming emissions to zero by the middle of the century,
  • Actually implement the decisions of the 2015 "Paris Agreement,"
  • Fulfill their promises and provide $100 billion per year in climate financing for developing countries,
  • Reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

This aims to limit global warming to a tolerable level between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.

Our Chairman Stefan Wagner, who is already on-site in another role, is observing the current events and developments firsthand and also has the opportunity to attend appointments for Sports For Future.

This included an exchange with Kai Zimmermann (Zenaga Foundation) and Unyime Robinson (African Centre for Environment, Agric. & Rural Dev.) regarding Sports for Future and the Green School projects. The initiatives are active in the areas of environmental education, nature conservation, sports, and renewable energy and were recently supported by the DFB's action matchdays. In collaboration with, among others, Waldhof Mannheim and GKS Holdorf, a total of 25 Green Schools have already been implemented.

Moreover, interesting conversations were held. We had a particularly insightful exchange with climate activists, including Luisa Neubauer and Louis Motaal.
