The sustainability report: Environmentally friendly dign in the sports apparel industry

[…] Global clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014 and became a significant factor in the waste on our planet – as well as in greenhouse gases. The clothing industry is responsible for about 5% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Another issue within production is the materials used to make the clothing. Synthetic fabrics like nylon or polyester are used to produce a large portion of our clothes. Although they are cheap and versatile, plastic-based fabrics contribute significantly to ocean pollution, as millions of tiny fibers enter the seas through our washing machines. An estimated 496,030 fibers enter the oceans per wash.

Sportswear – especially football jerseys – is predominantly produced from these environmentally harmful fabrics. So when Forest Green Rovers look for a new equipment supplier, they face a choice: either stick with a traditional sportswear manufacturer and maintain the standard or find a more sustainable alternative.

During their search, the English League Two club – chaired by renewable energy company owner Dale Vince – came across PlayerLayer, which conducts excellent research to create durable products from environmentally conscious sources.

Their contract was signed during the 2018/19 season, and PlayerLayer produced the first equipment for Forest Green Rovers – as well as a striking blue kit for the 2019/20 season. All proceeds from the sales are donated to the marine conservation charity Sea Shepherd. […]
