German Sustainability Award 2023: Who are the most sustainable actors in German sports?

Düsseldorf, May 4, 2023 – The German Sustainability Award, together with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, is awarding pioneers of sustainability in the world of sports for the first time. Associations, clubs, media, and companies in the sports industry can now apply. The first sustainability award for projects, initiatives, and products across the entire spectrum of sports will be presented on November 24, 2023, in Düsseldorf.

Federal Minister of the Interior and Sport Nancy Faeser says, "Germany is a great and modern sports nation, supported not only by athletes and professionals from clubs but also by many volunteers. Their commitment goes far beyond sporting achievements and deeply influences our society. The German Sustainability Award shows with what creative ideas and innovative approaches the sports world responds to the diverse challenges facing our society."

Thomas Weikert, President of the DOSB, emphasizes, "Sports organizations can help spread the approach of sustainable development throughout society. We therefore call on sports associations, in particular, to contribute their activities to the German Sustainability Award for Sports. Sustainability is a crucial future topic for sports!"

Sporting World Behind the Award

Together with the organizer of the UEFA Euro 2024 Philipp Lahm, the DNP Sport was introduced at the end of last year in the presence of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The new category of the largest award for ecological and social engagement in Europe honors ambitious, impact-oriented sustainability measures in the sports sector and aims to promote the further dissemination of the idea of sustainability in sports, the sports public, and the sports industry. The award is supported by the DOSB, the BMI, the German Football Association (DFB), PUMA, the world's largest sports trade fair ISPO, and Sports For Future.

Sport has the opportunity to address current societal challenges with commitment and take on an important role model role. "With about 800 applicants and 2000 guests at the final event, the German Sustainability Award is the largest award of its kind in Europe. The fact that sports is now also considered with its own category underscores the role of sports in the successful transformation of our society. We are very pleased to contribute our expertise as part of the jury for this significant award," says Stefan Wagner, 1st Chairman of Sports For Future.

Seeking Effective Contributions to Transformation

Awards will be given for effective contributions to climate and nature protection, resource conservation, and social cohesion. Associations and clubs (amateurs and professionals, grassroots and elite sports in all disciplines) as well as companies in the sports and media industry can now apply for six topics: sports association and club life; (major) events, matchdays, and sports festivals; sports facilities, sports venues, and studios; sports equipment, sports gear, and clothing; as well as sports media. "Everyday sustainability heroes" are also invited to apply.

Outstanding experts decide

Evaluation partners are PwC Germany and Strategy, as well as Dr. Torsten Weber, Professor of Marketing and Sustainability Management at CBS. Renowned experts from sports associations, business, research, and politics, as well as athletes from various disciplines, make up the approximately 20-member jury of DNP Sport. The competition runs until July 31, 2013.

The first DNP Sport will be awarded on November 24, 2023, as part of the 16th German Sustainability Day in Düsseldorf. Guests of the modern gala include the competition finalists, prominent athletes, honored guests from business, sports, politics, and society, as well as around 100 media representatives.
